Alex Eala was knocked out of the Madrid Open in the second round by Elise Mertens. The 19th seed beat Eala in straight sets in the WTA 1000 event. That ended Eala's Madrid campaign and closed off any chance of adding more ranking points in the tournament. Mertens moved on after a clear win.
